I grew up with guava trees, it is known to Sarawakien that guava tree wood is very hard, old generation Chinese would use old guava wood to plug on the centre of their traditional old stone mill’s lower stone or bed stone as a pivot to connect its upper stone or runner stone, these days most of my Sarawak friends got a Thermomix except I don’t have one, but during Chinese New Year they would pay more money to order rice cake noodle made from the old-style stone mill!

Picture: Stone mill still used by many third world countries’ villagers to grind rice into rice batter or soya bean into paste to make tofu, soya bean milk or even the famous Fuzhou oyster fritters

Then about three years ago, my NZ tiger-sister wanted me to help her trimming feijoa tree, and I found out feijoa’s tree wood is also as hard as guava wood, if I was a little slimmer, shorter and younger, I surely would love to swing on it like when I was young. The surprise was after the feijoa tree was trimmed and fertilized, nobody noticed that year the feijoa fruits were biggest and the most ever harvested since it was planted more than 10 years ago until they dropped to the ground!

For diabetics, eating guava without its skin can reduce the sugar absorption in your blood, according to an I-Shou University study (http://www.organicauthority.com/health/5-reasons-people-with-diabetes-eat-more-guava.html). I wish NZ scientists soon to conduct the same study on feijoa fruit to check if its skin should be peeled like guava to reduce the sugar absorption in one’s blood. Anyway, I peeled off feijoa skin during this special tea processing.

Ginger has been widely consumed by Asians since ancient time, it is known to get rid of seafood's fishy smell or games meat's peculiar smell, thus Asian will add ginger whenever they cook seafood. Chinese believe in cool and warm entities (apply to vegetable/fruits/bodies), if ginger with skin on it is considered as a balanced ginger, ginger without skin on it is considered as a warm property. As NZ winter is always cold and wet, ginger and mixed fruits tea will be an ideal drink to serve during the morning. I added jujube to the tea, and I used a bit of feijoa as well to balance the tea's flavor. Ginger is a mandatory herb to use for Chinese women during their maternity to keep them healthy, young and pretty after maternity, many Chinese women who have “warm body” would suffer ulcer but they wouldn’t suffer any ulcer no matter how much they ate ginger during maternity period. However, ginger tea is not advisable to drink it in the evening. It is known that ginger is as good as ginseng or even better than ginseng if a man drinks it in the morning. There are many accounts of older men who drank ginger every morning, their age spots were reduced. I think it’s not a bad idea for an older man to make his life interesting and more balanced by drinking ginger tea in the morning and pairing his dinner with wines! I applied jujube to this tea concoction to balance the minerals, vitamins, and energy content etc.

The concentration of this ginger mixed fruits tea is a personal preference, some people preferred spicy hot tea, some people have little tolerance for ginger’s spiciness, you need to add more water in such case. Optional to add sugar or honey by your own according to your sweetness tolerance, however, Jujube fruit is sweet but it is kept in minimum amount here in this tea (http://www.livestrong.com/article/554787-can-jujube-fruit-be-good-for-diabetics/) and balanced by peeled feijoa (http://www.findhomeremedy.com/15-awesome-health-benefits-of-feijoa-fruit/)
